A (not so) surprising examination the origins of ‘the pantry’

Are some pantries rooted in racist and sexist social structures? I recently considered the origins of the pantry after stumbling across articles examining ‘Pantry Porn.’ What a loaded question. Perhaps we’re wading into unexpected territory for a professional organizer.

I like to get theoretical. To look at things from a deeper, critical place. While slowly considering the history of spaces and the roles we “play” in the theater of our lives. This is especially important, considering the role of white women, since I am one.

Kitchens, generally, are steeped in gender-prescribed roles, as are other areas of domestic spaces. The objects and actions of kitchens are marketed towards women, who historically spent the most time in them. Therefore, it makes sense to me that;

Gender and race are hugely consequential in domestic spaces, whether we are conscious of it or not.

For some of you, this topic and the articles that prompted this writing might be too pithy, critical, or theoretical. I love topics that reach the heart of the spaces we live and work in! While in grad school, I did a LOT of reading on the history of space. Especially the structure of the Euro-American home as rooted in European history. The spaces we live (and work) in are manufactured, constructed, and forced, too formal, or downright uncomfortable for many of us.

I’ve also read a lot about domestic space. I recommend the following books if you want to learn more about how the modern-day Home has evolved. Home: A Short History of an Idea by Witold Rybczynski and AT HOME: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson were both very enlightening.

A more recent Dilettant Army article, ‘Merchandising the Void,’ has me thinking about the space next to or in the kitchen, called the pantry. Social media influencers and celebrities have recently shared voyeuristic views.  I find this strange. Who wants to be in competition for the best-looking pantry space? Apparently, influencers, professional organizers (their clients), and some celebrities. I might pay more attention if these spaces were more interesting, not just replicas of what we see on supermarket shelves. The SAMENESS of what is shared has grabbed my attention.

Austere modern whiteness is rooted in classism and racism.

During the 1930s, the era of stark architecture, a movement labeled by MOMA as “International Style,” was not meant to be lived in. Yet, we continue to conform ourselves to this uncomfortable aesthetic of clean, cold, and hard…aka “simple.”

I can’t deny that most of the organizers I follow are white women. Most of them are the ones repeating this stereotypical aesthetic. The performance of domestic spaces shared via social media to yield influence is twisted (and that’s the world we live in!). Check the tags and article linked here for more on this trend. Hello, #cleanToc Gen Z and Millennials using hashtags: #PantryOrganization & #FridgeRestock. What was once considered ‘minimalist’ is no longer about simplicity or living without excess. It has become its own aesthetic driven by brands and performance (ASMR/Music Mashups), with a not-so-subtle marker of status.

“I suggest the design and contents of Khloé’s pantry point to an evolution in the contemporary public role of the American kitchen and the role of the homemaker who labors and performs in this space. The ritualized stockpiling and organizing of goods, the oversized scale and format of the shelves and bins-this is a space where the performance of logistics is as important as the performance of domesticity.”1

If your home or pantry looks like a warehouse, you might want to dial it back and ask yourself why. If it feels like labor keep up with everything in your home, you might want to reconsider your priorities. Perhaps simplify? To simplify is not the same as to stage. Speaking of stages…

Pandemic hoarding had its time and place.

For now, and for most of us, that time is over. I’m not going to delve into the privilege of ‘prepping.’ Dare I say; this topic extends to our current topic, though.

“…organization is not just cleaning. It is design, a shift that allows the logistics and labor of contemporary homemaking to be revisioned as a hobby and a lifestyle.”2

Does homemaking feel like a hobby to you? Yeah, me neither. I’ll be examining this more in future posts.

I’m not attempting to perform domestic perfection for my clients or myself. I love it when I get calls to come to help someone set up their newly moved-into or remodeled kitchen/pantry. I cringe when they focus on buying new products to make everything look like a store (row-upon-row of products, decanted to perfection). This is NOT what organizing is (or should be) about. I am not in the business of creating the illusion of perfection.  Nor do I want to create more work for my clients or myself via revisiting overly manicured high-maintenance spaces.

I am asking each of us to consider WHY we need to see perfectly decanted, row upon row of stockpiled household goods.

I appreciate an aesthetically pleasing environment. Yet, I do not strive for greige, gridded, decanted repetition and hoarded household goods. This is akin to filling every void like an empty spreadsheet! Is this kind of minimalism a matter of taste? Or is it more like a white cube-sterile, austere-institutional, and classist?

Can you see the irony here? Are empty spaces and white walls refilled with more consumable goods than we need? There is so much hypocrisy in the ‘staged minimalism’ of the luxuriously rich. The term minimalism has been co-opted from the art world, an aesthetic originally applied to art in institutional spaces that were never intended to be lived in.

‘minimalism presents the illusion of intellectual simplicity — morally good, anti-consumerist — while being just as complicit in the problems of capitalism as anything else. Empty interiors often end up only emphasizing what’s left over as more valuable, more desirable’.3

Ask yourself whose aesthetic you are striving for.

Here are some questions that might help you decide what your priorities are.

  • Does living within a sterile white space make you happy?
  • How does hoarding materials make your life feel more abundant or simple?
  • Can taking the time to remove things from one container and put them into another simplify your life or make routines easier?

Containers, grids, and sparse aesthetics are not the solutions to simplifying our lives or bringing more joy.

Here are my takeaways:

Cleaning isn’t organizing.

Organizing isn’t design.

Homemaking is labor.

Cleaning and organizing are labor.

If creating a simple-looking lifestyle requires more labor, it’s not simple.

Overly manicured spaces are high-maintenance spaces.

Don’t believe the hype.

Beware of the aesthetics you are consuming.

Clearly, I am NOT an organizing influencer!

Piles of Paper and no system in sight?

Does paperwork pile around you at home and office? Piles of Paper might mean unopened mail, and papers can lead to cluttered horizontal surfaces. There are many reasons for paperwork to pile up. Getting to the cause can help you create a functional solution. Conquoring these piles can be overwhelming or totally rewarding! In this post, I share an easy first step to Purge the Paper Piles.

Many organizers, including Marie Kondo, recommend gathering everything by category. In this case papers. Instead, we are going to start differently. Before you gather all your paper piles its helpful to consider and identify how you got to into this situation. I don’t have those answers for you. I can share what I’ve learned from my working observations with clients, friends and family.

  • A “Trigger Event” such as an injury, death, move or birth put you off course. This event caused you to go totally off track and loose your system or maintenance of it.
  • Maybe you had a system started, but that system wasn’t a good fit and you were unable to maintain it. This is often the case when people feel they “should do” something a certain way or learned a system on the job, from a family member or friend. This can be incredibly frustrating and lead to feelings of shame.
  • Or maybe you never learned how to create or maintain a paperwork system, it’s certainly not taught in school or even at home (in most cases)!

We all have our breaking points. There are more urgent, fun and important things than dealing with a paper piles that seem so unimportant. We push them aside and make a lot of excuses for not getting around to them. Day after day, week after week and sometimes for years. When you get to this point, it’s easy to see how overwhelm creeps in and we don’t where to begin.

When we fall behind we tend to ignore what is present because we are worried about what is past.

Paperwork Piles

Instead of going back through everything in the past, start where you are. In my experience if you lost every single paper in your house, there is very little that can’t be fairly easily replaced. Just ask almost any millennial, they live with very few papers. Most of what we need to keep can be replaced with a few phone calls and emails.

Before gathering everything in your home/office, sit down and open your most current paper pile of mail, receipts etc. Consider what mail and papers you have coming in. What categories do they fit in? Here are some general and sub categories.

  • Household-Utilities, improvements, reciepts, insurance etc
  • Medical-You & your family members
  • Vehicles-loans, DMV/MVA info, insurance
  • Financial-Banking, credit cards, investments, taxes
  • Professional-continuing education, employment, resume etc

Make a list of YOUR categories. Don’t think about what you had in the past or what you “should have,” start simple. As you sort, consider going paperless with utilities, insurance, bank statements or anything you can easily access online. Consolodate sub categories into one general category. For example, one file for all utilities (to keep track of account numbers etc). Simplifying your incoming mail and filing will help create a system that’s easier to maintain.

Simple systems work best. Over-organized systems are cumbersome to maintain.

Before you purg past paperwork, create a “staging” area and gather your supplies:

  • A file box or two depending on how much you have. I prefer any that hold hanging folders and still close, like these. Bankers boxes will work, just don’t use the hanging files
  • File folders-new or used, different colors or one color. Don’t buy them unless you need to.
  • Hanging folders are optional but they do make the job easier (recycled is fine)
  • Sticky notes for temporarily labeling categories
  • Pens or pencils (pencils for starting, sharpies or labels for permanent labels)
  • Labels or a Label maker

Now pick up and begin to sort through a pile to see how it fits into your new simple system. Depending on how long this first step took, you can estimate how much time you will need to sort and purge all your Paper Piles! Essential College Organizing (for in-person & online learning)

This year, in particular, transitioning to or back to college might feel particularly overwhelming for both in-person and online classes. There is a lot that has changed over the past year but keeping organized is a strategy that will help improve study skills, lifestyle habits, and time management. These skills become more important the more we have at stake and college is a time where we are asked to juggle building new relationships, living independently or with new extended families,  and building knowledge. Any of these on their own is a considerable undertaking, so approaching this transition should be undertaken with a good dose of strategy, support from people who care about you and want to see you succeed and a large heaping of self-care. If you’re feeling overwhelmed already, break it down into smaller manageable tasks and be mindful of your emotions! It’s a big change in the midst of an already crazy world, so don’t dismiss how you feel!

The intention of this post is to share some helpful strategies for getting and staying organized for both new and returning students.  Some of you may have eagerly planned, shopped and packed over the summer and are settling in or getting ready to. There are still lots of folks preparing for the new school year, either in dorms or online. No matter where you are taking classes (in person, online), these Essential Organizing tips will help you get a handle on planning for and transitioning into this experience!

Productivity, Routines, and Schedules

By now you should probably have the school year calendar and have a target date for the start of classes and moving to campus. The following categories as they relate to routines and schedules can help make this a more mindful transition for life schedules and productivity.

  • Transportation-Will a car be available or will is it going to be transportation by bus or college shuttle? Is there a metro or other public transportation in their new city? Be sure to understand the best method of transportation and if cars are allowed on campus (not the case for many freshmen). Work out travel transportation arrangements ahead of time for upcoming school drop off, pick up and holidays (through the end of the year). This might include airfare so book ahead and know the rules and download any useful local apps for mass transit.
  • Planner or Calendar-Decide how to keep track of calendars so that everything needed is in one place, based on what works. Use either a digital or paper planner (there is a big trend to return to paper!) to keep track of important dates, orientation, move in, class schedule (and locations on campus), appointments, projects, finals, and holidays. Consider something like a whiteboard (in the dorm/room) to track schedules while adjusting to this new way of life.  If possible, do this ahead of time before heading off to school where the tendency will be to get caught up in the excitement of new campus life! Planners are only helpful if they are with you so keep it where it’s needed (in a backpack or purse etc).
  • Activities, sports, and clubs (most will be transitioned to online or postponed this fall)-If your college planning to get involved in sports, clubs etc…get these activities booked on your master calendar along with the school schedule and decide on any necessary transportation. Cross-reference these activities with the school schedule and keep it all in one place. It’s great to get involved, but be sure there’s a sense of balance between schoolwork, activities, and “play” or free time to be with friends, socialize, relax, etc.
  • Productivity, routines, and study time– Think and Talk about to-do lists and schedule planning (daily, weekly, or monthly) to stay on top of important tasks, projects, classes, and dates. Consider what routines and systems have worked in the past and set up systems for successful and focused study time. This will be different from situation to situation but consistency is key, especially simple things like waking up at the same time daily, making your bed, weekly shopping & laundry, etc.  When it comes to studying if you are easily distracted by other people being around, have a plan to seek out a quiet place on campus or at home (dorm or with family) that will enable successful focus. Create a few simple rules and rituals, like picking up daily (5 mins/day), keeping your desk clean, empty/repack your bag daily so you have what you need ready the next day. Have a plan for note-taking, setting up binders and folders by class (color code, etc), or other systems that have been successful. Find a routine for self-discipline, this means getting 6-8hrs of sleep a night, eating regularly, taking necessary medications, self-regulating screen time (games, apps, etc), and generally acting like an adult! All the freedom is fun but when things spiral out of control have a plan to get back on track. Most of us thrive with routines and it’s even more important in transitions to implement them for our own success:)

Supplies and Shopping

This is always a big part of school preparation. If you need to order equipment, uniforms, supplies, books, etc you may already be in the process of doing so. If your state (or the one the college is in) has a Tax Free Weekend (usually in August), plan accordingly so you can make major purchases over that weekend.

  • Supplies-Create a master list based upon all the supplies needed. “Shop” your house first, gathering anything on the list into one container (box or bag).
  • Budget-set a limit (realistic) on what you can and will spend so you don’t get sucked into extras.
  • Categorize-Break the shopping items into categories (see below). E.X. categories might include books, school/desk supplies, clothing, dorm room, meals, electronics, etc.
  • Shopping-Do a little preliminary research online and either make the purchases online or decide where you will go for what.

These are great resources to have on hand and will be helpful for a variety of uses in the dorm. I’ve created an Amazon Shopping list with suggested items here.

  • Backpack or bag
  • Bedside Caddy
  • Bed Risers (optional)
  • Hooks (a variety of sizes & types including command & over the door)
  • Hangers (check to see if you need to bring them but probably!)
  • Labels (a label maker or write on labels)
  • Laundry supplies (basket/bag, detergent)
  • Over the door or under bed shoe organizer
  • Overnight bag
  • Permanent markers
  • Poster Putty for hanging decorative things on the walls
  • Power Strip-surge protector
  • Small rolling Cart (with shelves or drawers)
  • Shelf &/or drawer dividers/organizers (assorted sizes)
  • Toiletry or shower caddy
  • Trash & recycling bins/bags (so many people don’t have them!)
  • Under-bed storage bins (will fit with bed risers-wait if you don’t know)
  • Zip bags in assorted sizes
  • Zip ties (assorted sizes for cables, hanging items, etc)

ABC’s of Dorm Packing Essentials

There are a ton of great resources and lists over on Pinterest, so I won’t recreate them but here are general packing categories. It’s best to wait on things like a mini-fridge, microwave, dishes (other than a cup/mug, plate and one set of silverware), Iron/Board (unless fashion is your thing!), vacuum (maybe a dustbuster and mini broom), TV and Printer. These are all things that others or the school will have. Besides, you might not need it at all or you can get them later.

  • Bathroom-Toiletries
  • Cleaning Supplies (lots of extra or a plan to get more as needed)
  • Clothing
  • Cooking & Dining Supplies
  • Desk Supplies
  • Dorm Room
  • Food
  • First Aid Kit
  • Electronics
  • Furniture & Decorations
  • Medications (Supplements, cold & Rx)
  • Personal Items
  • School Supplies
  • Sports Equipment

I’m an art studio voyeur…are you?

I don’t mean this in a weird way! I just enjoy being an art studio voyeur…a bit of a peeping tom, ogling and sneaking a peek into artists studio spaces! Art (both the making of and viewing) can be a cure for stress and it’s certainly something I turn to when I need a break.

These photos are from a trip back in 2016 to Athens where a friend (MFA candidate at the time) gave me a tour around UGA Lamar Dodd Studio’s. I had the chance to wander the classrooms and studio spaces of students while it was virtually a ghost town.

We visited the whole textile school, including screen printing, the dye lab, weaving studio, paper making and the ceramics classrooms. There’s something intriguing about looking at work in progress, an artist space, their inspiration boards, materials, and equipment.

There’s so much possibility in the process of making, seeing ideas bubble up and dance across the surface with no idea of who’s behind it and where it’s headed.

This is what I mean by being an art studio voyeur. It brings me pleasure to see the possibility of creative dreams on the horizon. In my organizing work-whether in a home, business or studio space, I hope to help others realize how important it is to recognize our creative voice. To create space for our creative dreams brings us one step closer to realizing them.

In the slideshow above, I don’t know who made the work, their background, their inspirations, their process and because no one was around this really did feel like I was art studio voyeur! Taking a peek into a moment of creative birth is a gift! 

I celebrate the creative spirit with camera in hand and often questions for the maker. I am happy to capture a glimpse of that spark, inspiration, and creative dreams yet to be fully realized.

This curiosity led me to launch the Inside the Artist Studio series (which I will bring back!) and that thread led me to embark on a whole new adventure where the process of studio work, my interest in why makers make and digging into the cultural implications of our current “makers movement” have led me to return to Graduate School this year.

Starting in July, I will be attending Warren Wilson for my MA in Critical and Historical Craft Studies. I realize that a lot of people might wonder why a professional organizer might be embarking on this path and my answer is, because I’m a Weaver and I see connections where others may not. I am extremely excited to explore the intersections between making and organizing, artist process and observation of that process. There is a certain energy that emanates from both the maker and the objects/materials being used and being in that space to observe, pick up inspiration and carry it forward.

There is Chaos and there is Order in all creative cycles…what do you see when you peek into the creative process?

Is your clutter overwhelming you?

As much as we all might like to live a totally clutter free life it may not be entirely possible.  If your is Clutter Overwhelming you, taking a look at what clutter categories are in our lives can help us understand what triggers our overwhelm.

: to run in disorder

: to fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness

There are many kinds of clutter in our lives. Take a moment to evaluate each category and decide where you can reduce clutter. Know that it might get worse before it gets better...all that dirt that may emerge by way of emotions and literal mess might not be pretty! Hang in there and you will be rewarded if you are can be open to the process. As your thinking about each of these categories, imagine them as you want them to be-intentions are powerful!  

  • Mail-incoming and outgoing (try reducing it by removing subscriptions to magazines, junk mail and catalogs).
  • Kids-school bags, sports equipment, books, toys, clothes etc…get your kids involved and create a place for easy pick up and storage of transient items.
  • Office-paperwork, files, receipts, mail etc. Create one designated area and consider using a type of action or tickler filing system to corral it all.
  • Digital-photos (delete the impulse pictures that don’t turn out well and you would never print!), email (removed yourself from subscriptions and consider creating multiple email addresses for different purposes), digital computer files (create a file hierarchy similar to your paper file system).
  • Household-things that you have sitting around but don’t love (rotate displays or give items away to friends and charity with no strings attached).
  • Mental-those endless thoughts that run in circles in your mind, find a way to tame them by taking notes, writing in a journal and releasing them if the are out of your control!

As much as we all might like to live a totally clutter free that’s probably not realistic. Understanding our limitations and having realistic expectations can help us decide where to start. Once you’ve evaluated the clutter areas in your life, prioritize them from worst to best and get ready for action.
