Wednesday Wellness::How do you spell NO?

Confession time~I’m very guilty of not being good at saying no, just ask ANYONE who knows me (and some that don’t even know me well)…Guilty as charged! How do you spell NO? Especially when Yes can seems so much more fun!

Some people have a hard time saying no because they feel obligated or guilty. It’s helpful to pause when someone asks you to help with something and pay attention to what your gut/intuition is telling you. When I feel my shoulders start to slump or my gut start to rumble I know it’s time to back off.  Are others being pushy, do people come to you because they have had past success suckering you into saying yes? If so then you may need to be on guard from the beginning!How do you spell NO?

Honestly though, my problem is that I just want to be involved in sooo many things…especially being new to my city.

Saying NO is a critical part of setting boundaries and creating priorities. Even when you feel like you are pretty good at doing this, you can always get better or take the time to check in with yourself before you say yes. Some people wait a few hours, sleep on it etc. Saying yes may be a set up for an all out attack against your most valued asset, your time!

Ultimately it comes down to making choices that are in alignment with your goals and dreams!

Learn to say NO so you can spend more time on the things you want to say YES to!

  • Resist temptations-Unsubscribe from emails or just delete them and if you are going through a particularly busy period let your friends and family know you can’t take anything else on right now.
  • Delegate, assign and let go of control in a kind but firm manner.  Be appreciative that someone thinks enough of you to ask for your help but you might not be the right person.
  • Understand your boundaries-Don’t get caught on the spot and feel you have have an answer right away.  It’s okay to say ‘Maybe I need to think about it’-defer decision making until you it feel right about it.
  • STOP and Focus on the big picture-is what you are about to agree to really in alignment with your big goals and will it make you happy?
  • Empathize and try to help find the right person or solution for the job when it’s not you (this goes back to delegating and deferring).
  • Practice, practice, practice saying no.

I believe in the power of SAYING YES, to the opportunities that are out there, to the universe, to new friends, to learning, trying new things, even things that make us uncomfortable and to helping others. This is why I say yes-because I’m a passionate, caring and helpful person-not out of obligation, guilt or shame. We will talk about the power and wellness behind saying yes another time.

Wednesday Wellness::Lean, Settle…Center

As I ended my Wednesday today on my Yoga mat practicing warm flow our instructor began and ended the class by asking us to notice our posture.  She suggested that we bring awareness to our tendency to lean forward or settle back in our daily lives.

In this awareness  then she asked us to think about our own tendency in our posture and to bring awareness to how that parallels our thoughts and actions in our daily lives.

Just this small shift in my personal awareness had me thinking about how I’ve struggled with my posture; slumping forward especially when sitting and YES this does parallel my thoughts.  I’m always thinking about the next thing I want to be doing, my mind is constantly racing ahead of my actions.  I feel I have a new perspective on my posture and am grateful that it can be a reminder in each moment to stay centered by not leaning to far forward into the future or settling too far back into my own personal history.

Visualize your Organized Life

As part of Get Organized month I’m sharing some of the big (& small) ways I use to set my intention and get going on the right footing for the new year.  The first thing I did was set my intention with a word of the year.  This year it’s all about being Radiant!

The next step in my practice for BIG (annual) planning/organizing/strategizing & goal setting is creating an Vision Board.  I started this practice back in 2011 and over the last couple years I’ve been so amazed at how fun it is to choose where I want to go and set it down in a concrete visible way.  Some people call these Vision Boards others call them Action boards (for those that feel the word “Vision” is to pie-in-the-sky).  There are many ways to create these boards via fancy software, fun apps, images, text, or even Pinterest.  I just go with the good old fashion cut and paste from magazines (which I always have on hand)!

How does this help you get organized?  If you feel there are areas in which you would like a different outcome in your life try creating a vision board to activate and attract what you want to accomplish and how you envision it in ideal reality.  Use images and words that feel the way you want to feel about your space and your life.

I prefer one that is all words/text and in a month or two I may create another board with images.  For me the clarity of a text board is more appealing and I find it easier to find specific words (rather than images that convey a feeling). I’ve been very careful about how I combine the words I place on my board to draw into my life the specific intentions I desire.  When I’m finished I keep it in either my office or studio (alternating) & check in with it for inspiration throughout the year, if I come across something I need to add, I’ll do that as well.

However you want to create your board and whatever you call it, just know that by being very clear about what you want to manifest in your life and putting it down in a concrete way you are more likely to draw attention to theses aspects of yourself (actions, thoughts, etc).  It’s all about the law of attraction.  When I look back at the last years vision boards I’m truly amazed at the ways in which the specific wishes, desires, dreams and actions have been attracted into my life!

This year, I’ve chosen words that are bigger and bolder in both action and font/colors; I’m reaching for even more!

Wednesday’s Word::RADIANT

Yes, this is it!  My word of the year for 2013 is RADIANT!  This word feels perfect after quite a bit of soul searching and some writing exercises (see HERE for recommendations).

This word also builds upon last years word; Soar.  I have soared through the past year and this year I’m choosing light, happiness and joy!  I choose to be radiant in all that I do and to attract into my life what makes me feel radiant.

Yup, BLISSED OUT, FLOATING ON AIR and JOYOUS pretty much sum up exactly what I have my intentions set on for this coming year.
If nothing else I will practice being RADIANT in 2013!

Wabi Sabi At Home

I love the principals behind Wabi Sabi!  Do you know about it? Here are some examples of how I embrace Wabi Sabi at Home in my world.

Wabi Sabi is a Japanese philosophy and way of life that embraces the imperfections, the bumps, bruises and “character” that we (as people and our “stuff”) acquire along life’s path.

I recently read a short article that questioned why we don’t apply this philosophy to physical selves. I am very interested in embracing wabi sabi in more aspects of my life and my self.

This is opposite of BOTOX folks, it’s about the wrinkles, the scars and the “patina” that makes us more beautiful!

“[Wabi-sabi] nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.”-Richard R. Powell

These objects possess the essential qualities of wabi sabi.  The are all beautiful but imperfect and I consider them more beautiful because of their imperfections.

My all time favorite broom!  I grew up using one similar (hold over from the days we spent in Asia) and my mom also uses hers from the Philippines (it’s as old as I am!).  It’s crooked and funky looking but it works great and I love the shape.

I made this little pot in ceramics in college and it’s a lesson in what not to do with glazes but I love the crackles and drips.

This is a piece of an African strip cloth I got from a family member and I’ve proudly had it displayed ever since even though a whole strip is missing, it’s unfinished and totally crooked yet I find it completely beautiful.

This Moroccan (I think) foot stool came from my husband’s family and we had ongoing household battles of whether to use it or not.  As you can see it has been scratched (by our beloved kitties) all around the edges and this is why my husband didn’t want it used but now that they are not with us I love the reminder of them ever present on this piece.  The ceramic vase and lamp base also exhibit qualities of the imperfect wabi-sabi aesthetic.

I thought many times about painting this slightly rusted magazine rack but I’m so glad I didn’t.

And this dish was rescued from the ceramics department trash because someone didn’t think it was good enough but I love the color, shape and all it’s imprefections it just as it is!
