Wednesday Wellness::The Great Purge Urge

December 17, 2014 by Heather Filed Under: Organize, Photography, Systems & Techniques, Wellness & Mindset

For the past month, maybe 6 weeks even, I’ve had this very strong desire to purge things. I’ve come to recognize this “Great Purge Urge” and I seize the opportunity when it strikes!

When I’m in this Mindset, I know I will act with certainty in decision making and get a lot more accomplished in a short amount of time then if I just pick away at the process little by little.

Sometimes this urge just comes out of the blue, maybe it’s an astrological event or some other outside influence I’m unaware of but I don’t generally care why it’s happening.

What I know from experience is that getting started, making quick choices and continuing eagerly creates momentum.

This type of action and the momentum generated can be LIFE CHANGING!  It’s for this exact reason that I work the way I do, in 3 hr (or longer) time slots and with appointments scheduled frequently (multiple days in a week or month).

Things get DONE, progress happens quickly, SPACE EMERGES where there was none.

I know I’ve got the bug, do you?  If it strikes and you would like some help, get in touch and let’s schedule some time so I can help you to get started!

Wednesday Wellness::Dancing for Joy

November 12, 2014 by Heather Filed Under: Inspiration & Education

Growing up I took a few dance lessons, some ballet and a little tap but it wasn’t something I was really into or that my parents pushed me to do.  As I got older I went to various school dances but I didn’t get into the dancing too much or give a lot of thought to the act of ‘Dancing’ at these school events…It was more about the social scene, who I was with (dates, friends etc). Later in High School I was a Pom Pom for 2 years.  I had a great time with my team mates, learning new routines and practicing after school and preforming at sports events.  It was something I got into and enjoyed…until I didn’t feel I was as good as others and eventually gave it up.  At that time I wasn’t dancing for Joy.  Although I certainly experienced moments of joyful self expression that can come with giving into the music and letting your body go-without self judgement or rules.

Now I dance as a way to be in my body and feel the joy of being alive!  I can only write about and express this feeling  after years of not really understanding it.    Sometime in college I began going to clubs and dancing the nights away with pure abandon and with friends I knew were not there to judge me.  Dance was transformed at some point during this time-sure there were probably alcoholic substances imbibed that helped me to loose my inhibitions, not to mention a heightened sense of sexual energy in these venue’s…but I began to to find Dance as the purpose and the end goal (not finding a man but maybe dancing with a few:).

After college I pretty much stopped dancing, life took me to places where dancing was no longer accessible in the same way.  Maybe I moved my feet and hips a bit at a party here and there but Dance was put on the back burner until I learned about Nia.  I was living in Maryland and visiting Charleston and a friend took me to a class where I found my feet, hips, shoulders, neck and even my voice.  I re-discovered Dance and began to go regularly to classes in Maryland where I found a new community of women (and an occasional man) who shared this form of Joyful self expression.   Over a period of 10 years or so now I’ve been dancing Nia and other free flow dancing at least once a week.  DANCE has taught me so much about Joy, community, practicing compassion, balance, paying attention to my body’s sensations and non-judgement (of self, of movement, of others).  For the first few years I was very self conscious of how I looked, moved, when I made mistakes, stumbled or otherwise just felt off…but this practice has helped me to honor all of those feelings and be okay with all the spaces between.  I’ve learned that we are all off balance or miss a step here and there in life and that’s okay because we might discover something delicious when we slip up…we might discover something something silly and playful…we might learn to laugh at ourselves and find the JOY of movement in our Dance through life!

Wednesday Wellness::Stop, Collaborate & Listen…Baby!

May 22, 2013 by Heather Filed Under: Inspiration & Education, Wellness & Mindset

Vanilla Ice had some meaningful wisdom in that famous song Ice Ice Baby…no I never thought I’d be sharing wisdom with you based upon his lyrics!

But, it’s true and I can relate these days to all 3 of these insightful words.  I’ve had to stop doing some things —>in order to find the right people to collaborate with and listen to.

Stop…

I’ve slowed way down on my blogging…have you noticed?  I’ve been blogging for 6 years now (this blog and my previous one) and I’m finding that it’s no longer something I feel super passionate about.  I also don’t currently have the time to dedicate to doing it well, partially because I haven’t said NO to certain other responsibilities!  I came up with this very organized calendar of post topics and relevant subject matter for the entire year but I just don’t have it in me!  I could purchase “packages” of posts created by other organizers, coaches etc but I think you can find the information you need out there and I never intended my blog to be the answer to all organizing questions.  I will continue to share insightful, meaningful and fun posts with you like Makeover Monday’s (when I get good photo’s I’ve got permission to post), Wednesday Wellness (my philosophical side) Thursday’s Inside the Studio (Where artists and organizing intersect), Friday Field Trip (just for fun wild cards).  You can count on 1-2 posts per week for the time being (more if I’m totally inspired but not promising!).

Collaborate…

Everything I do is about collaborating, with my clients, with friends and with new people I meet…all the time.  Other organizers do a fab job writing posts for blogs, magazines and books.  With their help I’ll share the best of what I find with you via other forms of social media like my Facebook & Google Pages, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.  I will continue to find ways to collaborate with other talented people out there, whether they are my clients or other professional colleagues I can help in some way.

Listen…

I listen to my clients needs.  It’s the first part and the most important part of what I do at every step with every project.  Whether I’m designing, organizing, teaching or doing a garden consultation I have to listen to get the job done right.  It’s also critical that I listen to my own needs and that’s why I’m putting this post out there to explain why I haven’t been blogging as much and how I’ve been re-evaluating my own needs and focus.

Hope you take take the time to Stop, Collaborate and Listen too from time to time!

Wednesday Wellness::Your Decision Destiny

May 8, 2013 by Heather Filed Under: Inspiration & Education, Organize, Systems & Techniques

Do you have difficulty making decisions?  We all do at times, promise!  But for some of us it’s more difficult.  There are several factors that hang us up in the process of decision making.

At worst decision making can feel overwhelming, anxious, impulsive and emotional. This can happen when we feel criticized and fall into default behavior such as perfectionism, compulsion, avoidance and procrastination which are ultimately forms of passive behavior.

“Our culture is a culture of getting.  Perfectionism is taken as a sign of how good we are as getters.  This preoccupation with rightness is a fanaticism…and it provides one of the quintessential post modern diseases: Stress.”  -Dr. Fred Newman (Book:Let’s Develop)

At best we can feel empowered, passionate and energized by taking action!  Now which would you prefer? No brainer.

So how can you take the difficulty out of decision making?  It helps really understand what drives your passion and purpose.  One of my favorite Authors, Danielle LaPorte shares her process of inviting her “Dominatrix of Decisions” to “Ride the Hedgehog“…Huh you say?  Well, to simplify (if you don’t want to go read her in person) she employs her inner diva to guide her to what she really wants and she uses the “Three Circles of Hedgehog” to help her through the process.

If all that sounds a bit too weird for you I’ll break it down point by point in a way that will hopefully guide you to your Decisions from a place of true desire and destiny.

  • Eliminate unreasonable time and budget constraints that make you feel all panicky.
  • Limit the amount of input you are willing to consider (keep it simple, don’t ask for 20 estimates and 10 friends for their opinions!).
  • Prioritize between large and small decisions and rank their importance.
  • Try not to be overly emotional or dramatic; most situations are shades of grey not black & white as we can sometimes make them out to be.
  • Gather all the info and materials you need to help you make your decision in one place (a folder, box, basket or bag).
  • Use your personal values, instinct, gut and spirit guide to inform your decision.
  • Ask for help from someone encouraging who you trust (not 10 people!).
