The Three C’s of Getting Organized

August 24, 2016 by Heather Filed Under: Inspiration & Education, Organize, Systems & Techniques, Wellness & Mindset 4 Comments

What does it take to be organized? Curiosity, Creativity, Commitment-being open to these are the key to getting and staying organized.

It takes a bit of Curiosity, a bit of Creativity and a Commitment to make lasting changes.

Here’s a little secret, wink, wink…

cusiosity, creativity, commitment

Find systems that tap into your curiosity, creativity and commitment for lasting change!

If your curious how it might feel to be more organized, keep reading…

Curiosity

One of the reasons that there are SO MANY organizing books and organizers in the current market is that there is no one right way and we are too busy to figure out what our way should be. People are curious to read and discover the big secret solution! Sorry, even the Kondo method isn’t for everyone! Evidence of this curiosity? I constantly stumble across books on clients shelves. I ask if they read them, most of the time only part and I’m told the system just didn’t work. Curiosity leads us to investigate and read books but don’t always spark creativity and the kind of lasting action that leads to change. Some people have tried getting organized by themselves, with friends, by reading and investigating how other people “get organized” and sometimes this works! It feels great, changes are implemented and maintained. For others, curiosity leads to a “shit storm” and things get worse, maybe WAY worse before they get better.

Creativity

Some people learn better by having someone with them to help guide them through the process. Coaching and therapists sometimes call this mirroring. It is our (organizers/coaches) job to tap into your ideas and needs and it’s your job to help express them. Mostly it’s our job to find creative solutions that maybe you know and maybe you don’t. We don’t know what we don’t know! One of the benefits of working with an organizer is that we see a huge variety of solutions day after day. We are there to observe how you live, make suggestions and guide you to find systems that work with your learning style and lifestyle! By asking questions and making observations we help you tap into and discover your best creative solutions.

Commitment

Helping you find better systems does not mean you are being asked to change but it does require your commitment.

By hiring an organizer it might seem that your being asked to change but but that’s not ultimately the goal. What your really being asked to do is to commit to trying something different. We are not trying to tell you how to do it but we might have lots of suggestions! There will always be a trial period for new systems. These should be monitored by you and the organizer your working with to see if they can be maintained. If not, don’t feel bad, keep being curious to try something else but a word of caution…

All Organizing Systems require Commitment! There is no such thing as maintenance free.

Some systems will feel easier for you to maintain than others. Finding that fit is what’s key. There isn’t one way that works for everyone. That’s the biggest secret, you may already have all the answers within you for your best systems. Organizers are there to help you discover them or teach you ideas you might never have considered.  Your curiosity leads you to try things differently. Your creativity holds the secret to new solutions. Your commitment to continuing will lead you to lasting change.

Give me a call or send me an email if you feel like you are floundering and need some help discovering your best systems! I’d love to help!

Commitment is probably the hardest one for most people.

Janet, absolutely agree! I think the curiosity and creativity come naturally to a lot of people (at least my clients:) The commitment is why so many people fall short of realizing their ideal organizing scenario.

Wow Heather, this is a great post! So true and so many people need to understand this. There is no one method for all. You have to try different systems until it works for you. You are right people have to stay committed to this and be vigilant.

[…] I often see people backsliding with new systems and feeling guilt and shame about it. We have to be patient with ourselves and also recognize that backsliding can happen between maintenance routines. There is no reason to feel bad about it, just get back on the saddle and keep going with your new system. When I work with clients, I schedule routine maintenance sessions and I look for signs of backsliding, it’s going to happen from time to time especially in the beginning. Just be aware of it and give yourself time to develop these new organizing muscles! Last week I wrote about The Three C’s of Organizing:Curiosity, Creativity, and Commitment. […]
